Birgit Ramsauer’s current show includes photographs from her “ART: HOME-LESS” and “Moles” series, as well as light boxes from her “Paris, Baskirzev Grave” series.

Ramsauer works with various media but is best known for her performances, documented with photography and DVD. These performances follow in the footsteps of early 20th century experimental film from the Dada, Surrealist and Constructivist movements. Often, she plays a central role in her films; however, equally as often, the locations, architecture, and every day objects serve as the leading “characters”. Through these performances, she reveals that every day, mundane human actions and things have a much greater sociological and cultural relevance.

Through Ramsauer’s performance project “ART: HOME-LESS”, created in 1997, her visits to New York , Marseille, Moscow and Berlin , document unconscious, human actions. In her series “Paris, Baskirzev Grave” the artist visits various locations around Paris described in stories, taking Polaroids of them all. This series is a bit different because the photos are then painted, according to colors specically selected by the artist. Her latest body of work, “Moles”, continues her exploration of the impact a common action has on the grander scheme of a society. “Moles”, an homage to Günter Eichs’ poem, shows the artist within architectural monuments, striking poses with her body in ways that creates deliberate humor. Ramsauer explains that her aim is to “bring awareness to certain characteristics that define the inner texture of a specific social environment”. Each of her performances is documented with a photograph, freezing the action as evidence of the performance, and in this way, elevating the action to a tangible photograph which serves as an icon.

Birgit Ramsauer was born in Germany in 1962 and has been based in Berlin since 1992. She is an international artist, exhibiting, lecturing and teaching in Europe and the U.S.

The installation takes as its departure point a possible future history in which all traces of humanity have disappeared, icebergs exist only as myth, and Antarctica is the last continent.
We learn as children that the earth has undergone many drastic physical changes. Our teachers tell us that “right where we are standing now was once a vast ocean” or “vast desert” or “dense jungle” – an unimaginably different landscape, populated by unknowable plants and animals. In the future proposed by The Future Royal Family of Antarctica icebergs will be icons of a moment past, a representation of the geological era we inhabit right now, and a reminder that the landscape we perceive to be immutable can be completely transformed.

For The Future Royal Family of Antarctica the iceberg has become a mythological icon, and the penguin a family crest, like a dragon or griffin in our times – archetypes which represent power, a link to the past, and a deep understanding of the mysterious. These symbols are a reminder of the reality of global transformation, the scope of time, and its inevitable march forward.

presents a core sample or “bodenprobe” of the state of the arts in Berlin, Germany.

The exhibition features the work of nine contemporary artists, either currently living in Berlin or having done so are now living in Portland, that have been impacted by the vibrant arts community in Berlin. Filmmakers, photographers, painters, and installation artists, many with a hand in multiple mediums, this selection of artists represents the diversity of art and art making practices emanating from a city positively buzzing with a critical mass of creativity, opportunity and cultural exchange.

Far more than just a gallery annex, The EAST/WEST Project is a 501(c) international artist residency and exhibition program that travels to different communities around the world recognized for their emerging art scene. The project encourages cultural exchange by establishing a short term (about six months) gallery and residential space for international artists to share, develop, progress contemporary ideas and build long term relationships.
